Too Late by Colleen Hoover is smutty, sexy, dark, and twisted. Throughout, Hoover depicts the perverted nature of abusive relationships through the development of foil characters, Asa and Carter, and their relationships with each other and their mutual love interest, Sloan. Hoover originally posted the chapters of Too Late as a writing exercise on a free website. After the chapters had gained significant traction, she self-published them as a novel. The novel is structured to mimic the chapter order in which they were posted on the website. The final few chapters include prologues and subsequent epilogues, drawing an incredibly stark comparison of the characters before and after the plot of events.
Too Late alternates point of views between Asa, an abusive, hot-headed drug dealer, Carter, one of Asa’s new business partners and an undercover cop, and Sloan, Asa’s long-term girlfriend and Carter’s new “hot piece of ass” in Spanish class. The plot follows Sloan as she falls in lust with Asa, then falls in love with Carter, and tries to escape Asa’s depraved grasp without getting herself and Carter killed.
I rated this novel 4/5 stars. I expected it to be more of a thriller than a twisted romance, but this twisted romance is so dark at times that it feels like a thriller. It’s beautifully written while depicting an abusive relationship in a profound, uncensored light. I negated one star because while there are plenty of wild plot twists throughout this novel, the overall plot is a bit predictable.
